About Us
The South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group was set up by local people on 3rd October 2002 to understand, record and where appropriate preserve the remains, of what was once an extensive industry, for the present community and future generations.
We are now 10 years old and have produced a book to summarise some of our achievements over this time. You can view or download this e-book (10MBytes, pdf*) for free or order a hard copy. If you could like to get involved please join our group.
The SGMRG has an elected committee, a formal constitution and it also promotes Codes of Good Practice for mining history. The SGMRG also adheres to the National Association of Mining History Organisations (NAMHO) Guidelines.

The Group seeks to develop awareness, appreciation, conservation and enjoyment of all facets of mining heritage throughout South Gloucestershire for both the membership and the local community.
Ways in which the group seeks to achieve this include:
- Holding various events and activities for members and the general public to promote awareness, appreciation and conservation of the mining heritage of South Gloucestershire.
- The creation of an inventory of surface and underground mining heritage.
- Maintaining a catalogue and archive of information to assist research into all facets of local mining history and development.
- Physical surveying, recording and documentation of the extant mining heritage.
The annual programme varies but includes:
- A Monthly event - including walks talks and visits.
- Open days (usually September).
- Record Office trips.
- Working parties.
